Post-workout stretches feels great and that’s all the motivation I need. My stretch routine includes a good shoulder stretch to help relieve any neck and shoulder tension. I interlace my fingers and raise my arms over my head as high as I can while I relax my shoulder blades down my back and hold. Then looking straight ahead and keeping my arms in line with my ears I bend to the left and hold then the right and hold. It’s a simple stretch that feels great.
After each workout, my legs would get so sore that stretching actually relieves some of that soreness. Stretching in general relieves my muscle aches. And it can be as simple as stretches like slowly turning my head sideways and up/down. Actually, I do the above everyday no matter whether I excercised or not.
Triceps stretches feel great after a workout. Bend one elbow behind your head and use the other hand to gently pull the elbow in further until you feel a stretch in your tricep – then switch arms and repeat.
Stretching after a workout allows my body to relax. I like to incorporate yoga poses in my stretching like Downward Dog & Childs Pose which help stretch the back and leg muscles – very effective after a hard workout!
I can be a slacker about stretching, especially because I work out in the morning and I’m keen to get straight into my breakfast. On the Debbie Seibers Slim in 6 dvd there is a great 14 minute full body stretch. I’ve put it on my iPhone so I can do it after a workout anywhere. It’s easy because I just follow along until it’s finished.
I also swear by regular Moksha Hot Yoga to keep my body nice and flexible and pain free.
I love rolling over a stability ball on my back and my belly to open up my abs and spine. Feels awesome.
Congratulations to Jody who was drawn in this month’s CareerFit Challenge. I love everyone’s flexibility ideas! Remember – stretching is about preventative maintenance. Always hold stretches for at least 20 seconds to get the benefits of enhanced flexibility and to stay injury free!
